Cultural Competency

Broadly, cultural competency is the integration and transformation of knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific standards, policies, practices, and attitudes used in appropriate cultural settings to increase the quality of services; thereby producing better outcomes.

Specifically, cultural competency is an increased understanding of LGBTQI individuals and families and their experiences; positive, affirming attitudes towards them; the skills to develop the provider-patient trust necessary for excellent health care, and the sustained provider and organizational behaviors that demonstrate continuous improvement. This is distinguished from clinical competence: a separate set of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors needed to deliver responsible and equitable diagnosis, treatment of symptoms and disease states, and preventive care.
